R.I.P. Strip Club Zoning

According to the Seattle PI, the strip club zoning proposal is pretty much dead. Ms. G. would love the opportunity to dance on its grave.

It also makes her very proud of where she lives. Not long ago the prevailing attitudes were that Georgetown should start negotiating the boundaries of the zoning because it was a DONE DEAL. No more, no deal. Because of G'Town's awesome neighbors' willlingness to be vocal and tell it like it is, we have one a battle to preserve our neighborhood and our way of life.

Now the dump. Another thing that appeared to be a done deal is getting shakier and shakier. With work, we can do it.

Georgetown: The Last Urban Frontier

Ms. G. saw a great poster at Two Tartes. Georgetown: The Last Urban Frontier.

Ms. G. has always felt that by chosing to live in G'town she's on the forward edge of urban living. A pioneer. Like the pioneers who set out with hopes of a better life and a lot of determination, the residents of Georgetown are people who want to invest in a neighborhood not just live somewhere. If you want to just live somewhere, go to the suburbs where everyone has a security system and people stare at you funny, and no one gives a SHIT. In Georgetown we give a shit.

Our pioneering continues. Ms. G. cruised by Rainier Cold Storage today and saw...NEW WINDOWS. Rumor is that something is up but we won't know until July. Until then, mum is the word. Ms. G. is envisioning a restaurant with tall windows, high ceilings and some vintage chandeliers. A girl can dream.

Some stuff coming up in the 'hood.

Food for Thought

Summer hit us briefly in the ‘hood. After a few weeks of sunshine and tank tops, Ms. G. had to put on her mucky old tennies for her walk around the neighborhood. Once again, she was struck by how much she loves living in G’Town. Despite the occasional wacked out prostitute lingering on the corner, this is a nice neighborhood full of good people.

Ms. G’s wanderings took her to Two Tartes where she partook of a delish pumpkin cupcake. She can see why the Seattle PI liked this little hole in the wall so much. Need a password for the PI? Go to Bug Me Not and bypass having to register!

It’s off to Stellar tonight for Ms. Georgetown and some friends. Ms. G. thinks that Stellar feels like a classic Seattle joint and loves to go there. It makes her think of the days when Seattle was about grunge and slackers, before the dot com boom came along and everyone started making restaurants full of overstuffed velvet booths, wannabe hipsters and low hanging blown glass lamps. And the pizza is good too!

Food for thought? More like thoughts of food. After her walk Ms. G. cozied up in her house and listened to the rain in the trees: nothing like a rainy, grey Georgetown kind of afternoon. Politics can wait for another time, and there’s plenty to talk about there.

SPU Rolls out the Big Guns

Does the tiny urban hamlet of G'Town have SPU on the run? Not yet, but it seems that they have been forced to pull out their PR machine. Ms. G. had a healthy dose of outrage with her toast and jam this morning when she was greeted by a front page article in the PI:

Georgetown Hopes Band can Stop Garbage Plan

Nevermind that we're not really waiting for Eddie Vedder to swoop down and save the poor, helpless residents of Georgtown. But it makes a catchy headline, and as Richard Conlin points out, Pearl Jam being in G'Town is a sign of a vital neighborhood that businesses want to invest in.

Ms. G.'s favorite part? The subtle threat at the end by SPU's Tim Croll:

"We really think this is the best site. If this is not approved, the city will need to rethink its recycling goals."

Ms. G. has met the charming but increasingly irritated Mr. Croll. Will he be calling out his goons to beat us in the knees next?

Time for Georgetown to pull out our own guns. Letters to the editor commence: editpage@seattlepi.com

Don't forget to include our message...NO MORE DUMPING ON THE SOUTH END!

Time for Ms. G's morning walk and she sees a little blue sky over the 'hood. Bye for now.

Georgetown in the Media

Hello neighbors!

G'town made the news again, this time a column by Susan Paynter. Ms. G. thinks Georgetown represented well.

Waving Pitchforks at SPU

Here's our friendly Rabanco garbage man waiving at Ms. Georgetown.

Ms. Georgetown wasn't able to make the Thursday night meeting with SPU but a close friend tells her that it went well. SPU acted like they expected to have to deal with farmers waving pitchforks. Instead they were met with a diverse crowd and well thought out arguments.

We also found out that SPU plans to send 600 trucks per day through the streets of G'Town. Ms. Georgetown says a loud "no" to that one. We have enough truck traffic to dodge as it is. No more dumping on Georgetown and the south end in general.

In the meantime, I'll keep my finger on the pulse of the 'hood.

A ruler of Ms. Georgetown's own...

Another Georgetown Community Council meeting down. Chips and salsa were had all around at the Coliman.

Dow Constantine from the King County Council spoke for a few moments. This is the second time Ms. G. has interacted with Mr. Constantine and she's impressed. He seems ready to fight for G'town and, boy oh boy, do we need someone to fight for us right now. Put on those boxing gloves, Mr. Constantine!

Then the spin gal from the King County Airport came to tell us all about art at the airport...and she gave us all rulers...and they might show a movie at the airport and we can all have popcorn...and I think I officially LOVE THE AIRPORT. I mean, fly more planes overhead, and is there any way you could make the louder so I can be aware that I live near an airport ALL the time?

Seriously, it's great for the airport to want to partner more with the community and we'll take what we can get, even if it is free popcorn and rulers. Look for details on upcoming chances to take tours of the airport. Ms. G. has a soft spot for industry so she'll be going along.

See, spin works!
